As an artist working primarily in theatre and film, I create through an inextricable web of collaboration. I believe passionately in the therapeutic value of the performing arts, both for performer and audience. Using stories to communicate and connect with people, I strive to induce meaningful and personal transformations within.
When I was six years old, I used to close off a section of our house and barricade myself in a dark hallway stuffed with pillows and blankets. Sitting in the cockpit of my rocketship, I would launch a million miles into outer space and transform the hallway between my bedroom and the bathroom into the gravity-less surface of the moon.
These moments of sheer imagination and play inform what I do as an artist today. As an actor, I create using the materials inside each one of us: the spark of imagination, a sliver of an old memory or dream, the fantasy worlds we created as kids, and the thoughts we often neglect and forget about as adults. Reflecting these stories through the body and voice, which includes the unseen spiritual, emotional, and mental facets of being alive deconstructs barriers and sparks insight into the human condition.
Art for me must include risk. If I delve into unknown landscapes, explore the vulnerable, emotional depths of myself and commune this with you, then perhaps we can both participate in a moment that connects and changes us.
Connecting with other human beings, r elating to and identifying with people, ignites an “Ah Ha” moment for me; time slows down, the worries of the day melt away, and we simply share together in this experience of being alive. Life is about relationships: to other people, to my self, with the environment around me, it is through these interactions where I learn fulfillment, gratitude and interconnection.
